Tough Challenges Await Rangnick

MANCHESTER, England: Despite frustration, Manchester United fans have never mocked manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Jose Mourinho – but it happened early yesterday morning when Ralf Rangnick heard it from fans at Old Trafford.

The German manager’s decision to remove Mason Greenwood after an hour sparked the dissatisfaction of supporters after seeing the young striker produce some quality action as other United players looked lethargic.

It was a specific criticism but sparked even greater concern after Solskjaer’s removal in November, the quality featured United back to back under the acting manager.

The sentiment was heightened after Wolves won 1-0 which was also their first success at Old Trafford in 40 years.

Aside from the performances in the first half hour against Crystal Palace, not looking the energetic, stressful football style often associated with Rangnick when in charge of the club in the Bundesliga.

Facing the Wolves, the team looked confused, without direction and they played with little enthusiasm – as defender Luke Shaw realized after the game.

The club are expecting a better level when they appoint Rangnick in the hope that it can develop a young coach who has helped Solskjaer before.

But former player Michael Carrick, who became interim manager, resigned on the day the German operator took over the first team.

It was followed by first team coach Kieran McKenna who now runs third division club Ipswich Town, bringing along his teammate at United, Martyn Pert as his assistant.

Rangnick, who brought in former coach from the United States with New York Red Bulls Chris Armas as an assistant, was tasked with leading the first team until the end of the season.

He also has a long -term role as a consultant and will be involved in determining who will take over as the next manager.
