Lazio Finally Advanced After 2 Decades
ROM: Ciro Immobile scored his fifth goal in the Champions League this season as Lazio advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time after two decades following a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge at home.
Immobile scored Lazio’s second goal from the penalty spot at the Stadio Olimpico, here, after Joaquin Correa put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute.
Ruud Vormer equalized after Correa’s opening goal with Hans Vanaken headed in the 76th minute to ensure a balanced position despite having to play 10 when Eduard Sobol was sent off before the break.
Lazio ended Group F behind Borussia Dortmund, advancing to the last 16 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season where they advanced to the quarter-finals with current manager Simone Inzaghi lining up the team as players.
Inzaghi, who is also a former Italian striker, brought the old club to the European elite after 13 years of being sidelined as a result of successfully finishing last season’s Serie A competition in fourth place.
In the action here, Lazio need to maintain an unbeaten record to qualify after both teams are tied 1-1 on October 28.
Immobile missed the action in Belgium and also during the 1-1 draw at Zenit due to a positive COVID-19.
