Barca Will Cut Player Salaries
BARCELONA: Barcelona will cut 122 million euros (RM594 million) from the salaries of its players this season to help offset the club’s financial problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The cut, however, needs to get the consent of the players who are expected to sign the agreement in the near future.
The salary reduction will help cover the club’s loss of revenue from ticket collection at Camp Nou as well as some other effects of the COVID-19 prevention measures.
Barca acting president Carles Tusquets described the financial situation as “not dramatic, but very worrying”.
Tusquets temporarily took over the club following the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomey last month.
Reinforcing Barca’s finances is a priority for Barca’s new president whose election will take place on January 24.
The new candidate who will be vying for the post is Joan Laporta, the club’s president from 2003 to 2010 and leading Barca to win 12 major titles.
