Manchester United Defender Smalling Joins AS Roma
ROM: Roma have signed England defender Chris Smalling for 15 million euros from Manchester United, the Serie A club announced today.
In a statement, Roma said the 30-year-old, who scored three goals in 37 appearances in all tournaments and was loaned to the club last season, signed an agreement with the Italian club until the end of June 2023.
Smalling has become accustomed to life in this city and was given the title ‘Smalldini’ due to his good performance in the Roman defense.
“Nothing comes easy in life,” Smalling said.
“My mind and heart are always in Rome. I am happy to finally be yours. Daje (Let’s continue) Rome!”
The deal lasted until the end of the transfer and was reportedly only registered at the last minute including an additional 5 million euros according to media reports.
Smalling was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010 from Fulham, and made 323 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals.
Roma have also announced that they are selling Argentine winger Diego Perotti to Turkish club Fenerbahce, which ended the player’s five-year stint at the club.
