United Legend Thinks VAR Is Embarrassing
LONDON: Two Manchester United legends described the assistant referee (VAR) video as ’embarrassing’ after rescuing an old team against West Brom, at Old Trafford, yesterday.
Bruno Fernandes is probably the luckiest player on the field after two results from the video technology in his favor with United winning 1-0.
Referee David Coote gave a penalty to the Baggies early in the second half when Fernandes fouled Conor Gallagher, but reversed the decision after referring the incident to video.
Minutes later, Coote gave United a penalty after the ball hit Semi Ajayi’s hand – even though the Baggies turned back.
Coote’s result was backed by VAR and Fernandes scored the only goal of the match after twice on penalties.
It follows the video technology once again intervened by canceling the first kick after goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was allegedly out earlier than the goal line which saw him successfully save Fernandes’ penalty.
United legend Rio Ferdinand said: “This is a shameful decision. The more often you see it, the more penalties. It is clear, that is not the real purpose of VAR.”
Another famous former United player, Paul Scholes said: “We experienced a VAR disaster after a week.”
